It is a much more faithful adaptation to Togashi's art-style in the manga. The newer series lacks the same heart that can be seen in the original version. The animation is never poor, but it is also never really amazing.

Aside from a few climactic moments in the Chimera Ant arc , the animation never really hits that next gear and always just feels "good enough. In terms of the voice acting, it's almost unfair to compare Hunter X Hunter '99 to the remake. A decade's worth of technological improvements allowed for studios to record high-quality voiceovers like never before.

In addition to this, the evolution of anime and the dubbing of anime in America grew rapidly between the creation of the two shows. Gone were the cheesy and cringe recordings of the past. Now fans could watch anime in English without losing a certain amount of atmosphere and tone that bad voice acting would have previously contributed to. Many fans debate which arc out of all the Hunter X Hunter stories is their favorite, and the Yorknew City arc is often a popular pick.

The constant thunderstorms and dark, hopeless city perfectly compliment the shift into a mafia-focused storyline. The art-style and animation help achieve this tonal shift much more successfully than the version of the Yorknew City arc. The fight feels like a much more epic affair compared to the newer rendition. The direction of the series is taken in a way that the dark, criminal-underworld plot of the Yorknew arc feels out of place in comparison to the rest of the stories that were told in the newer series.

The Hunter Exam is the first arc of the show, and as such, it is vital in the introduction of the core themes and key characters for the rest of the show. The version of Hunter X Hunter does a great job of thrusting viewers into the world of Hunters quickly, but not so suddenly that they are left confused.

In contrast, the version takes its time to get through the introduction. This is not a negative by any means, but the way the first few episodes of the remake are paced makes the start of the series much more digestible, especially if the viewer is new to the world of shonen anime.

Whereas the remake of Hunter X Hunter finds its strength in its speed, the original version of the show takes pleasure in slowing things down. This was partly out of necessity, as they eventually began to catch up to Togashi and ran out of material to take from the manga. The filler episodes in Hunter X Hunter are much more fun and interesting in comparison to most anime fillers, and is definitely worth checking out for fans of the original four characters.
